MONTE VERDE OR MONTE D’ORO

The Monteverde district is located behind the Janiculum, on a tuff hill whose color has sometimes led to it being called the golden mountain. More usually, however, it was called Monteverde because many areas of vegetation are found here, first of all the Doria Pamphilj Park, the largest in Rome. In ancient times, Caesar’s Gardens were located here. Urbanization took place in the early twentieth century, with the construction of some elegant villas which today are part of what is called Monteverde Vecchio. This area, which today belongs to the XII Municipality, was an important center of the Resistance during the Second World War. After the war, a new urbanization took place which gave life to the Monteverde Nuovo neighbourhood.
